Tuli’s Heel Cups or Cushioning Heel Cups for Sever’s Disease?
Sever’s disease (Calcaneal apophysitis) is a very common problem with the heel in growing children. The condition is self limiting and they always grow out of it, but can be quite painful and distressing while waiting for that to happen.
The typical recommended management of Sever’s disease is some pain relief (eg ice packs after exercise; maybe some paracetamol); a reduction in activity levels to a level that is tolerable (eg reduce the amount of time paying sport); and some cushioning in the shoe to protect the heel bone. A running type shoe with good shock absorption can also be used for more cushioning.
What is the best way to get cushioning for Sever’s Disease?
We have two options: the Cushioned heel cups (in the kids size) and the Tuli’s Heel Cups (the small size). In all honestly, in the grand scheme of things it is six of one and half a dozen of the other as to which one is the best way. They are both probably both equally effective at shock absorption and providing cushioning.
